Skilled technicians are needed to operate and maintain a building infrastructure and related equipment. Facility operation and maintenance technicians must have the knowledge and skills needed to service and repair HVAC and refrigeration equipment, building control systems, and plant process and production equipment. Facility operation and maintenance technicians are also responsible for boiler operation, the maintenance needed to sustain facility and plant production activities, and maintaining comfort for building occupants. Training for careers in facility operation and maintenance can be obtained at an accredited technical school or through an apprenticeship such as the stationary engineer apprenticeship offered by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). This apprenticeship training also leads to qualification for stationary engineer licenses, which are required by most states.

TEACHING TIPS

The benefits of establishing a healthy relationship with local businesses

The link between technical instruction and business and industry practices is critical for success. Most employers are willing and eager to be involved in instructional programs. An active advisory committee should be established to provide program guidance and identify potential job opportunities for students.

Local business and industry representatives can provide real-life examples for learners through group tours, practical experiences, presentations, and demonstrations. In addition, equipment and material contributions from business and industry can greatly enhance technical instruction.
